Gael Monfils reached the third round at Indian Wells in California with a three sets win over Leonardo Mayer of Argentina. The French number eighteen seed led their head-to-head 3-1 and he took the opening set 6-4 thanks to a single break of serve in the seventh game. Two breaks apiece followed in the second before Mayer struck again, taking the set 6-3 to force a decider. Monfils broke in the fourth game of the third and went on to complete a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory in an hour and 59 minutes. He'll next face Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
