Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland battled back a set down to beat British qualifier Daniel Evans (4)6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of Indian Wells on Friday. It was Evans who controlled the match in the first set taking the tie-break after his fourth set point. The three times Grand Slam champion reacted into the second set breaking Evans twice, in the third and ninth games, to send the match to the decider. Wawrinka, the 2017 runner-up, broke once again in the eight game to win the encounter with his first match point after two hours and 11 minutes. Wawrinka faces Marton Fucsovics of Hungary in the second round of Indian Wells.
