Italy's Fabio Fognini produced one of the best performances of his career to upset defending champion Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters. Fognini won 6-4, 6-2 to bring to an end Nadal's 18-match winning run in Monte Carlo. The Spaniard has won this title 11 times, but never looked like giving himself the chance for title number 12. After losing the first set 6-4, Nadal then lost the first five games of the second set with Fognini easing through to the final against another surprise name, Dusan Lajovic of Serbia.
