Nine-teen-year-old Marketa Vondrousova pulled off the upset of the tournament at Indian Wells after beating second seed Simona Halep 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. The Czech player stunned Halep with four breaks in the first set to take it in 30 minutes. The Romanian player regrouped in the second set, breaking Vondrousova in the fourth game to force a decider. But no one expected Vondrousova to repeat her performance from the first set, breaking four times and wrapping up the third set, 6-2, in 34 minutes. The world number 61 booked her place in the quarter-finals against the winner between Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and Australian Ashleigh Barty.
