Football News: Manchester United open talks over Jeremie Frimpong deal?

Manchester United are allegedly in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong's representatives. The 22-year-old had an outstanding 2022-23 season with the Bundesliga club.

The Bundesliga defender scored eight goals and assisted nine times in 36 games across all competitions. Frimpong has mostly played as a wing-back under head coach Xavi Alonso, and his most recent goal came in a 3-0 away win over Schalke 04 last weekend.

Frimpong has spent nine years in Manchester City's academy before going to Celtic. During his time in the Sky Blues academy, he made 50 appearances and won three trophies, including the Scottish Premiership title.

The defender has now evolved into a crucial player for Leverkusen and is said to have piqued the interest of several European clubs. Since the end of last year, the Red Devils have been connected with a transfer for Frimpong.

While the Dutch international is also said to be interested in joining the Premier League heavyweights. According to Sky Sports, Man United has "initiated" talks with Frimpong's agent Jeffrey Lemmert.

Moreover, the reports also suggest that the conversations have been "quite positive" for a transfer this summer.

Plettenberg goes on to say that Ten Hag is a fan of the right back, who is under contract at the Bay Arena until June 2025 and is willing to exploring new opportunities during the summer transfer window.

Despite reports of a move to Manchester United, Leverkusen director Simon Rolfes claimed in January that the German club was "quite calm" about Frimpong's future at the club.

In an interview with Sky Sports Germany, Rolfes stated:

"We are very relaxed with Jeremie. It would be fatal if he didn't draw attention to himself from big clubs with these performances."

"He is very conspicuous with his way of playing and is an enormously important player for us. I told him that he will still get his playing time with his quality within the tournament."

"He can decide a game with a single action because he's incredibly quick and good at dribbling. We'll be happy when he's back [after the World Cup] with us. Jeremie has a long-term contract at Leverkusen, so we're very relaxed."

West Ham United right-back Vladimir Coufal is said to be a prospective replacement for Frimpong should he opt to leave this summer.

United's interest in Frimpong will most certainly increase if they agree to part ways with either Aaron Wan-Bissaka or Diogo Dalot, who are both out of contract in June 2024 and face uncertain futures at Old Trafford.

Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan and Benjamin Pavard of Bayern Munich have both been linked with a summer move to the Red Devils.
