Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is said to have informed his friends that he would not renew his contract. The England captain's future has been a huge talking point for the past few years now.
The talks of Kane's exit had started since he attempted and failed to secure a departure in the summer of 2021. Manchester City were unable to persuade Daniel Levy to lower his £150 million asking price.
Kane, on the other hand, might become a free agent at the end of next season. Moreover, he will turn 30 this summer without having won a major title with Tottenham.
The Lilywhites' continuing lack of trophies and off-field drama has further fueled speculation that Kane may leave this summer. While Bayern Munich and Manchester United are keeping a close eye on developments.
Spurs will do all in their power to keep Kane at the club beyond the summer of 2024, but he has informed people closest to him that he will not be signing a new contract with the North London club.
Contract talks with Kane have barely reached the preliminary stages as the 29-year-old focuses on the rest of the season with Tottenham.
While it has been reported that Spurs are willing to turn down summer offers for the striker and push negotiations into next season.
But, such an approach would expose them to the risk of losing Kane for nothing, and it has to be seen whether Levy is willing to take that significant risk.
While Manchester United are regarded the frontrunners to sign Kane away from Tottenham this summer, Spurs and Levy would be hesitant to deal to a direct rival.
According to reports, the Tottenham manager still regrets letting Kyle Walker to join Manchester City in 2017, and he has sworn not to allow any top players to join the two Manchester clubs in the future.
Not with standing Levy's stance, Manchester United are thought to be preparing an initial bid of roughly £80 million for the England captain, having been given the go-ahead by Erik ten Hag to begin their pursuit.
Kane scored his 205th Premier League goal in Tottenham's 1-1 draw with Everton on Monday evening, bringing him within 55 goals of Alan Shearer's all-time record of 260, and he recently hinted that he will stay in England's top flight to try to overtake his compatriot.
Kane was asked by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak after becoming England's all-time leading goalscorer if he was aiming to break Shearer's Premier League record, to which he replied:
"Yeah it's definitely there. I'm getting closer, so it's for sure something I want to achieve, but I try not to look too far ahead in football."
"A lot can change in a short period of time, but I'm feeling fit - I'm 29 - so hopefully got plenty of years left. For sure, it'd be something I'd love to do."
Kane now has 272 goals and 63 assists in 426 appearances for Tottenham, who reclaimed fourth place from Manchester United on goal difference at Goodison Park, but the Red Devils have two games in hand.
