As the All England Open started, India suffered a major blow in form of Saina Nehwal, who was forced to retire after getting injured during her opening round match against Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt. Saina was seen trailing 21-8, 10-4 when she walked up to the chair to declare her withdrawal from the tie. Earlier, star India shuttler PV Sindhu cruised towards the next round by outsmarting Malaysia’s Soniia Cheah. Sindhu beat Cheah 21-11, 21-17 with ease and looked confident as compared to the other tournaments she was part of this year. In other matches, HS Prannoy outclassed Malaysia’s Daren Liew 21-10, 21-10 while Lakshya Sen upstaged Kantaphon Wangcharoen 21-18, 21-12. With not-so-impressive performances in the past, Indian shuttlers will look to make their mark in one of the most prestigious tournaments in the history of badminton.
