Football News : Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp criticizes referee’s VAR decision in Arsenal defeat

In the wake of his team's 3-2 Premier League loss to Arsenal on Sunday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been quick to criticise decisions that went against his team.

After winning that five-goal thriller at the Emirates, the Gunners reclaimed first position, leaving Liverpool in 10th place 14 points behind but still with a game remaining. As soon as Gabriel Martinelli broke the score, there was disagreement. However, due to a technical issue, the VAR was unable to address a potential offside against Bukayo Saka.

To the shock of the crowd, Liverpool was then refused a penalty as the ball touched Gabriel Magalhaes in the arm. Saka then scored the game-winning penalty after Thiago Alcantara fouled Gabriel Jesus.

Despite the fact that video of the Liverpool penalty incident indicated that the ball bounced onto Gabriel's hand from his chest, Klopp was unimpressed by the complaints from Michael Oliver and the Stockley Park supporters.

"When you look at the Arsenal game, I know people don't want to hear that, but I think on Sky Sports [in] the Ref Watch, when Mr Dermot [Gallagher] twice says the decision was wrong by the best English referee, Michael Oliver,"

Klopp told reporters ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash with Rangers.

"One penalty was no penalty because before the season we had a big meeting with the refs and they said no soft penalties anymore... and it was a penalty we got [given against us]."

"Then we saw this season already which kind of situations we've had for handball and there were penalties with exactly the same situation, but not in this game. But Mr Dermot, not to forget, thought yes, this was a penalty."

"The first goal, how I heard now, of Arsenal was pretty likely offside - we just cannot find out because a camera was not there or the angle or whatever. I don't know exactly the reason, but when I saw the pictures I thought it was obvious that Saka came back from an offside position."

"So what did we miss in this specific game? Just the right ref decisions would have been helpful, to be 100 per cent honest, and then we can judge the game new."

At Ibrox, Liverpool can cut the gap to one point needed to advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League. Under Klopp, his team is three points ahead of Ajax in second place and three back of league leaders Napoli.

Given that Luis Diaz, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Joel Matip all sustained injuries against Arsenal, the Reds will need to make a number of adjustments for their matchup with Giovanni van Bronckhorst's team.

Diaz will be out due to a knee injury until after the World Cup, while Matip and Alexander-Arnold will miss two weeks due to calf and ankle injuries, respectively.

Against Rangers, Andy Robertson will be available once more for Klopp, while others like Arthur, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, and Curtis Jones are still out injured.

The Liverpool manager also cautioned supporters not to expect his team to "fly" at Ibrox, but rather to "battle" until the very end to beat Group A's bottom team.

Liverpool will have three days to rest up after their game on Wednesday before hosting Manchester City in a thrilling Premier League match on Sunday at Anfield.
