Football: Kenyan striker Michael Olunga named MVP at J.League Awards

Kenyan international Michael Olunga was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the 2020 J.League annual awards on Tuesday in Tokyo. The 26-year-old striker had already clinched the Top Scorer Award by virtue of scoring 28 goals for Kashiwa Reysol this season. Olunga becomes the first African to be named as the MVP in the J.League and the third African to win the Top Scorer Award, after Nigeria's Peter Utaka in 2016 and Cameroon's Patrick Mboma in 1997. Kawasaki Frontale's record-breaking season saw their manager Toru Oniki getting the Manager of the Year Award for the first time. Oniki had led Kawasaki Frontale to their third league title in four years and this season, the club set a new league record with the most number of points (83), most wins (26) and most goals scored (88).
