There was a defeat for one of athletics' major stars, Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis as the Diamond League came to a wet and windy Gateshead on Sunday. World record holder Duplantis thought he had beaten world champion, Sam Kendricks, with his final attempt at 5.80 metres - but turned to see the bar fall off belatedly. American Kendricks won with his creditable 5.74 metres in the appalling conditions. Britain's sprint star Dina Asher-Smith gave the soggy home crowd something to cheer with victory in the women's 100 metres. Asher-Smith, world champion over 200 metres, beat American Sha'Carri Richardson, the fastest woman in the world this year, with world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finishing down the field.
