Tennis News: Asian Tennis Tour to help lower-ranked players in country

We all know how tough it is to become a professional tennis player in India, let alone being able to compete and sustain at the top level. From lack of infrastructure, coaches, money to petty politics, there are plenty of roadblocks for tennis players in our country. Although India has produced world class players in the past but currently, there is a dearth of top players from India on the ATP & WTA tour. The lack of success on the Davis & Fed Cup further makes it more apparent. While the likes of Rohan Bopanna and Leander Paes are still going strong on the doubles circuit, the singles field looks shallow. Moreover, inadequate ATP Challengers in the country again highlights how far India is as a tennis nation. But perhaps, what is more displeasing and sad to see is that how the lower-ranked players struggle to meet their ends meet in India. Having said that, the initiative taken by the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association in support with the All Indian Tennis Association to revive the Asian Tennis Tour might just help not-so-renowned players make a better living from the sport.
