Football News: Chelsea outbids Liverpool for Romeo Lavia

Chelsea reportedly outbid Liverpool to entice Romeo Lavia away from Southampton.

The Saints rejected Liverpool's third and most current approach of £45 million for the Belgian midfielder earlier this week.

Despite being relegated to the Championship, Southampton is determined to holding out for £50 million.

Chelsea have spent the most of the summer pursuing Brighton & Hove Albion's Moises Caicedo, but after an £80 million bid was rejected, the club may be moving their focus to Lavia.

Brighton are also standing fast and are said to value Caicedo at around £100 million, so Chelsea may now be looking for alternatives.

However, according to talk SPORT, Chelsea's proposal is around £48 million, which is significantly less than Southampton's value for the 19-year-old.

With Chelsea demonstrating their intent, Liverpool may miss out on their man if they refuse to match Southampton's demands.

With the season-opening just days away, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool squad is still missing a recognizable holding midfielder.

New signees Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, two more accustomed to getting forward, as well as Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones, are Liverpool's sole choices in midfield at the moment.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's new role as an inverted full-back may help significantly, but the club is still looking for a replacement for the leaving combo of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.

Chelsea has also experienced a midfield exodus this summer, with N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, and Mason Mount all departing.

So far this summer, Lesley Ugochukwu is their lone addition at that position, but January recruits Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos are also options.

The two clubs meet at Stamford Bridge on the first weekend of the Premier League season this Sunday.

Chelsea's bid for Lavia, on the other hand, shows that the struggle on the pitch will not be the only one between the two clubs this month.
