Football News : AZ thrash Heracles 5-0 but miss out on Champions League place

AZ failed in their bid to clinch a place in next season's Champions League despite thrashing visitors Heracles 5-0 on the final day of the Dutch Eredivisie's regular season. Thursday's goalless draw at Groningen meant AZ had to pick up three points and hope that PSV would lose away to Utrecht on Sunday. Pascal Jansen's side also needed a ten-goal swing if they were to move up into second place on goals scored. Myron Boadu and Jesper Karlsson grabbed two goals apiece and Owen Wijndal added a fifth late on, but PSV picked up a 1-1 draw to secure second place in the final Eredivisie standings. AZ had to settle for third, which means they go into next season's Europa League play-off round.
