Football News : A Controversial penalty resulted in Man United defeats to Real Sociedad

In their Europa League match on Thursday at Old Trafford, Real Sociedad defeated Manchester United. It was 1-0 thanks to a penalty kick from Brais Mendez in the second half.

After Lisandro Martinez was called for a handball, David Silva's shot deflected off the center-leg back's and onto his arm, setting up Mendez's attempt. Little more than an hour before kickoff, Man United announced that the game would still take place, despite the news that Queen Elizabeth II had passed away at the age of 96.

"Following direction from the FA and UEFA, tonight's fixture against Real Sociedad will take place as planned. A minute's silence will be held before kick-off which will allow the teams, match officials and everyone in attendance to pay their respects to Her Majesty,"

read the statement.

"Both teams will wear black armbands and the flags at Old Trafford will fly at half-mast as a sign of our utmost respect."

Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Fred, Casemiro, Anthony Elanga, and Cristiano Ronaldo, were among the replacements made by Ten Hag for the Europa League match following the weekend victory over Arsenal.

Soon after the break, the 37-year-old also had the opening opportunity of the second half, narrowly missing the post with a close-range header as Man United continued to appear the more likely to score.

In the 49th minute, Ronaldo went at it again, sending a fierce shot just over the crossbar. At the other end, Alexander Sorloth's header went wide of David de Gea's goal.

Then, after Takefusa Kubo had produced a cross from the left, Lisandro Martinez, who had just been introduced, had to superbly clear ahead of the waiting Sorloth.

When a David Silva shot struck Lisandro Martinez's leg and deflected onto his hand in the 57th minute, Real Sociedad was awarded a contentious penalty, and Brais Mendez stepped up to give the visitors the lead at Old Trafford.

In the 64th minute, with the La Liga team pressing for a second goal, De Gea had to stop a shot from Kubo. Shortly after, Casemiro headed a Fernandes cross over the crossbar.

In the 88th minute of the game, Alejandro Garnacho impressed for Man United after coming off the bench. He shot just wide of the Real Sociedad goal.
In the latter exchanges, as the home team urgently tried to force a leveller, Casemiro attempted to pick out the bottom corner, but the Brazilian's effort never threatened to find the goal.

Real Sociedad managed to defeat the 20-time English champions by a single goal in their Group E opening as they were able to close off the game with a fair amount of ease.

In light of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Man United is awaiting word on whether their Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon will go ahead, although Real Sociedad will undoubtedly play Getafe in La Liga on the same day.
