Football News : Premier League fixtures set to be called off after Queen's death

This weekend's Premier League games are reportedly going to be postponed as the country grieves Her Majesty The Queen's passing. The announcement that Queen Elizabeth II, the queen of the United Kingdom with the longest reign, has passed away at the age of 96 came from Buckingham Palace at 6:30 p.m. BST on Thursday.

A statement read:

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

On Thursday night, matches between Arsenal, Manchester United, and West Ham United, in the Europa League and Europa Conference League were permitted to go on as all three teams observed a minute of silence prior to kickoff.

Officials from the Premier League met with the Government on Thursday night to consider whether the football schedule for this weekend should continue. The 20 teams competing in the top division are anticipating the cancellation of this weekend's schedule, according to the sources, an announcement is anticipated on Friday morning.

Due to The Queen's passing, both Friday's Championship match between Burnley and Norwich Cityand the League Two match between Tranmere Rovers and Stockport County have been officially postponed.

A statement from the EFL read:

"As a mark of respect, following the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen Elizabeth II earlier today, the EFL has confirmed that its fixtures scheduled for tomorrow evening (Friday 9 September) - Burnley v Norwich City and Tranmere Rovers v Stockport County - have been postponed."

"A determination regarding the remainder of this weekend's scheduled fixtures will be made following a review of the official mourning guidance, in addition to further consultation with DCMS and other sports on Friday morning."

This weekend, the rest of the football pyramid is expected to do the same, and there have already been cancellations in a variety of other sports.

The third and final test between England and South Africa at The Oval has been postponed till further notice in cricket, and the European Tour organisation in golf has confirmed that the BMW PGA Championship has been cancelled.

In other news, the Premiership Rugby Cup match between Northampton and Saracens was postponed on Thursday night, and it will be decided on Friday morning whether or not the opening matches of the new season between Bristol and Bath and Sale and Northampton will go on.

In Formula One, however, the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday will proceed as scheduled, and a minute of silence will be observed before Friday's first practise and another is anticipated before the race starts.
