Cricket News: Shami and Ashwin put India on top after day 4

India gained a strong grip over the first Test at the end of the fourth day, needing a further six wickets to go one up in the series, while Australia have 219 to get on a fifth day pitch. Set a steep target of 323, Australia lost two wickets each to R Ashwin and Mohammed Shami, before a patient Shaun Marsh and Tavis Head saw them through till the end of the day. Earlier, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane extended India's lead past 300 as both of them countered the Australian bowling attack and played brilliant shots. However, Nathan Lyon ran through India's middle order as he returned with afigures of 6/122, with India being bowled out for 307 in their second innings. The post-lunch session saw the downfall of the Indian innings as they gifted away the wickets -- losing four wickets in their last 29 balls for 4 runs. In reply, the hosts were off to a bright start before R Ashwin ended opener Finch's stay in the middle. Marcus Harris resisted the Indian bowlers for a few overs before falling to Shami. Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb too couldn’t last long putting Australia under pressure. Shaun Marsh and Travis Head remained unbeaten when stumps were drawn, with the visitors requiring another 229 runs to win with six wickets in hand.
