Kolkata beat three-time champions Chennai by 10 runs to go third spot in the IPL 2020 points table. Opting to bat first Rahul Tripathi promoted up the order to open repaid the team management's faith in him with a 51-ball 81. His knock helped Kolkata score 167/5 in 20 overs. Chasing a target of 168 for victory Chennai had the upper hand until the start of the 17th over, when they had Sam Curran and skipper MS Dhoni in the middle and needed 44 to win off the last four overs. Dhoni fell to Varun Chakravarthy in that over for a 12-ball 11 after which Curran fell to Andre Russell off the first ball of the next over. Shane Watson hit his 2nd consecutive half-century as Kolkata choked the flow of runs and grabbed some crucial wickets as they restricted the MS Dhoni-led side to 157/5.
