Football News: Manchester United closing on signing Chelsea’s Mason Mount for £60m

Manchester United are allegedly close to a £60 million deal with Chelsea to sign midfielder Mason Mount.

The 24-year-old is largely set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer after talks to extend his contract, which expires in June 2024, fell down.

Both Liverpool and Arsenal were linked with Mount earlier this year, but Man United have ramped up their pursuit in recent weeks and appear to be in pole position to capture him.

Last week, the Red Devils made an opening bid of £40 million for Mount, which was quickly rejected by Chelsea, who were said to be seeking between £65m and £70m.

Man United has since returned with a revised offer of £50 million plus add-ons, but the West Londoners have rejected it yet again.

According to The Mirror, Mount is now on the verge of a permanent move to Old Trafford, as Manchester United have reached an agreement with Chelsea on a £60 million deal after a third round of talks.

Mount has made it clear that he wants to join the Red Devils, and the Blues will not stand in the way of his next move, according to the source.

Erik ten Hag is thought to be eager for Mount to complete his move to Manchester United before the club's pre-season tour kicks up in Oslo in early July.

Mount is said to have already agreed personal terms with Manchester United, who have informed him that he is a priority acquisition for Ten Hag this summer.

Mount joined Chelsea's youth at the age of six and has since played 195 times for the senior team in all competitions, scoring 33 goals and assisting 37 others.

The England international, a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge, has yet to win a domestic trophy, but he has won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup during his tenure with the Blues.

Mount is one of several Chelsea players expected to leave this summer, including Mateo Kovacic, Kai Havertz, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Hakim Ziyech, as the West London club seeks to balance its books and reduce the size of Mauricio Pochettino's bloated first-team roster.

Mount's possible arrival at Manchester United might cast doubt on the futures of Fred, Scott McTominay, and Donny van de Beek, who have all been linked with moves away from Old Trafford this summer.
