Colombia's Miguel Angel Lopez won the 99th Volta Catalunya, after finishing 13th on the final stage in Barcelona. It was the 25-year-old Astana rider's second victory in a stage race. Italy's Davide Formolo took the final stage win after pulling away from an early breakaway group. He came home alone to win by 51 seconds from Eric Mas of Spain. The biggest threat to Lopez came from Britain's Adam Yates, who attacked 21 kilometres from the finish, aided by his brother Simon, but he was reeled in two kilometres out and crossed the line in seventh place. Lopez won by 14 seconds over Yates, with his Colombian compatriot Egan Bernal third overall, 17 seconds down. The stage was marred by a major crash 41 kilometres out involving Romain Bardet, a podium finisher in the 2016 and 2017 Tours de France.
