Michael Matthews sprinted to victory on stage two of the Volta a Catalunya, just edging world champion Alejandro Valverde and Daryl Impey into second and third on the line. A three-man breakaway dominated much of the 166-kilometre stage between Mataro and Sant Feliu de Guixols. The trio were finally reined in 24 kilometres from the finish, while further back four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome lost over seven minutes on the day after a crash left him chasing the peloton. Matthews was part of a large bunched sprint going into the finishing stretch and he timed his move perfectly to snatch the win in a time of four hours, nine minutes and 34 seconds. Thomas De Gendt remains top of the overall standings while Valverde, who won the stage's bonus sprint, moves up into the second spot.
