Cricket News: Sunil Gavaskar’s verdict on future of Rohit and Virat in T20I cricket

In T20 international cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's futures appear bleak at the moment. The idea at the present appears to be to test young players on the way to the T20 World Cup 2024.

The duo is not participating in the T20I series against New Zealand and did not play in the last T20I series against Sri Lanka. However, Sunil Gavaskar, a former captain of India, thinks Rohit and Virat's T20I careers are not over.

"The way I see it is that, the next T20 World Cup is in 2024, next year, and the new selection committee that has come wants to give more opportunities to the younger players. That doesn't mean that Kohli and Rohit won't be considered anymore. And if they have an impressive form throughout 2023, then they have to be in the team,"

the 73-year-old said to India Today.

The Indian living legend thinks the board is attempting to offer fresh talent opportunity, and if these two talismans of Indian cricket perform well in 2023, they might be able to play in the T20 World Cup in 2024.

According to former Indian Batsman, there is a reason to not select Virat and Rohit for the upcoming T20 series. While explaining the reasoning behind itGavaskar said,

"The other factor is with the Australia series starting, the selectors might have wanted to rest them for the big contest so that they can make a fresh start against the Aussies and that will benefit India,"

The former cricketer thinks Virat Kohli can eventually surpass Sachin Tendulkar's mark of 100 international centuries if he continues to play for another five or six years. He claimed that the "Master Blaster" played until the age of 40 and that Virat may join him at the pinnacle if he can sustain such longevity.

"In case he plays, 5 or 6 years, he will get to the 100. There's no doubt about it. His average is about 6-7 hundreds a year. So if that happens, then surely he can add another 26 hundreds in the next 5-6 years, if he plays till 40,"

Gavaskar said on AajTak.

While Sunil Gavaskar is optimistic about the Indian duo's T20 future, but a constant poor run might welcome the young blood under the guidance of the emerging captain Hardik Pandya.
