Maria Sakkari knocked defending champion Kiki Bertens out of the Charleston Open and advanced to the quarter-finals. Sakkari, the 15th seed, fought back from 4-1 down in the first set, breaking Bertens twice to force a tiebreaker. Bertens brought up four set points, but the second seed couldn't convert any of them and Sakkari reeled off three successive points to take the tiebreaker 10-8. There were breaks in each of the first three games of the second set, with Sakkari claiming two of them for a 2-1 lead. The Greek player held serve the rest of the way before breaking Bertens again in the ninth game to wrap up a 7-6(8), 6-3 victory.
