Tennis: Federer through to Indian Wells quarter-finals after 6-1 6-4 victory over Edmund

Roger Federer advanced to his 13th Indian Wells quarter-final on Wednesday thanks to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over top Brit and 23rd seed Kyle Edmund in their first meeting. The 37-year-old Swiss, who has won the Californian tournament five times, broke twice in the opening set, while Edmund was unable to take advantage of his three break points. A break in the fifth game was enough for Federer to wrap up the second set and the match, as the Brit was wasteful once more, missing four chances to break his opponent's serve. In the quarter-finals, Federer will have a first career meeting with Poland's Hubert Hurkacz, who is 15 years his junior. The young Pole defeated Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3 in the fourth round to reach his first Masters 1000 quarter-final.
