Fifth seed Kiki Bertens fought back a set down to beat Italian Camila Giorgi 0-6, 7-6(7), 6-4 in the first round of the Qatar Open. Bertens, the world number eight, failed to hold service in the opening set, which the Italian took 6-0. The Dutch player, who won the Saint Petersburg Open last week, battled back to force, and win, a second set tie-break - Bertens recovering from a 5-2 down to force the decider. Both players exchanged breaks in the third set, but it was Bertens who stood her ground with a third break, to Giorgi's second, to win the match after two hours and one minute. Bertens will face 2016 Qatar Open champion Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in the second round.
