Football News: Former India footballer Ashok Chatterjee passes away

Former India footballer Ashok Chatterjee passes away. Chatterjee was part of the bronze medal-winning squad in the Merdeka Cup in 1965 and 1966. In Merdeka Cup 1965, 1966 he scored two goals in the group league match that India won 3-0 against Japan, 1967, 1968. Playing for India in the Merdeka Tournament, he scored goals against Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Burma and Pakistan. He got a chance to play in the Asian Games at Bangkok in 1966. Playing for Mohun Bagan from 1962-1968, he won League, Shield, Durand and Rovers Cup multiple times. During that time, Mohun Bagan won Calcutta League for four years and Durand Cup for three years in a row. Ashoke scored in the 1964 Durand Cup final as well as the Calcutta League derby match. In 1968, in the tournament to commemorate 100 years of Amrita Bazar Patrika, Ashoke Chatterjee captained the Mohun Bagan side against East Bengal. In 1969, he went to East Bengal only to return to Mohun Bagan in 1972. He was honoured with the Mohun Bagan Lifetime Achievement Award by the club in 2019.
