Serena Williams secured a win at the Hopman Cup, beating Switzerland's Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to level the tie 1-1 for the USA. The result ensures that the eagerly awaited mixed doubles pitting Roger Federer and Williams against each other for the first time will decide the Group B rubber. Bencic gave away a one-set advantage in a match played in good humour. The two struggled to contain their amusement when Bencic almost fell over the net in a quest to return a dropshot in the second set, then it was Williams's turn to feel embarrassed when she stopped play for a failed challenge at match point. Bencic then had a half-hearted challenge on the second match point - also in vain - but the two were all smiles as they exchanged handshakes at the net.
