Clubs from all over the United Kingdom will meet again on Monday to discuss additional postponements before the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II. Games from the grassroots to the Premier League were postponed over the weekend in honour of the UK's longest-reigning monarch. (Passed away at 96).
On Thursday evening, the Queen passed away while Arsenal, Manchester United, and West Ham United were getting set for a European match; the Gunners had already started playing when the news broke.
Prior to the cancellation of domestic games, Man United and West Ham's games did go through as scheduled, and Monday, September 19 at Westminster Abbey has been set aside for the Queen's state burial.
The event would demand unprecedented levels of security, therefore the Metropolitan Police and other units from all around the nation are anticipated to travel to the capital to manage it.
As a result, as football administrators and police work to find a solution, the possibility of additional postponements, particularly those involving clubs in the capital, is looming large.
The Daily Mail reports that new negotiations between the police and football clubs will start on Monday, but there has already been a disruption to the upcoming slate of European games.
Rangers' Champions League Group A encounter with Napoli has been put back by 24 hours from Tuesday to Wednesday, and no Partenopei supporters will be in attendance at Ibrox.
Additionally, Gers supporters won't be allowed to attend the rematch in Naples the following month, and there are worries that Arsenal's Europa League match against PSV Eindhoven may be postponed.
The concept of shifting events outside from London has been brought up in order to offset a lack of police personnel for games in the city, but logistically, such scenario may be challenging to execute.
On Sunday night, Brentford and Arsenal will play in a London derby, Tottenham Hotspur will play host to Leicester City, and Liverpool will travel to Chelsea.
Originally, it was hoped that Spurs' match may be played at the King Power, but with Leicester Tigers playing Newcastle Falcons in the Gallagher Premiership on Saturday, it is now doubtful that the match would be moved.
The National Police Chiefs Council, however, expressed optimism that fixtures could be completed in a statement.
"Since the passing of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the UK has activated a national policing operation."
"UK Policing is working closely with other organisations to ensure that events are held safely and with the appropriate security."
'Following the decisions of the Premier League and English Football League to cancel this weekend's matches, we will work with football clubs to try and ensure that, where possible, football fixtures can take place safely when balanced against the requirement to support national events and deliver day to day policing. This is a unique situation and we are working closely with everyone involved."
Wednesday's Champions League match between Chelsea and Red Bull Salzburg will be Graham Potter's first match as Chelsea's manager and come before Arsenal's match with PSV.
