Football News: Kylian Mbappe breaks record for most World Cup final goals

Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick against Argentina this evening has made him the first player to score four goals in a World Cup final. The 23-year-old France talisman was mostly kept silent during the Qatar 2022 final, but 10 minutes from the end of regular time, he erupted with a quickfire brace that evened the score.

As a result, Mbappe became one of just six players to score in two different World Cup finals and the youngest player in World Cup history to score ten or more goals.

In extra time, Lionel Messi's second of the match restored Argentina's advantage, but Mbappe completed his hat-trick by scoring from the penalty spot a second time, becoming just the second player after Sir Geoff Hurst to win the match ball in a World Cup final.

With his third goal, Mbappe has now scored four times in the World Cup finals, surpassing Hurst, Pele, Vava, and Zinedine Zidane to become the top scorer in football's most important match.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward scored enough goals to earn the Golden Boot ahead of clubmate Messi, but that was little consolation given that France ultimately lost a penalty shootout.

Nevertheless, Mbappe's historic feats saw him finish the 2022 World Cup
with a record of 12 goals in 14 games, which was the same as Brazilian icon Pele.

Only five players have ever scored more goals in a World Cup than the 23-year-old, who will be aiming to break Miroslav Klose's record of 16 goals at next competitions.

Meanwhile, Messi has also broken many World Cup records while playing in the final.

With his opening goal in the World Cup final against France this afternoon, Lionel Messi broke a number of new records.

After 23 minutes at the Lusail Stadium, the 35-year-old took the lead by scoring from the penalty spot after Angel Di Maria was hauled down by Ousmane Dembele.

Messi became the first player to have 20 direct goal contributions at a World Cup since records began in 1966 by beating Hugo Lloris.

The Argentina captain now has a total of eight assists, which is a record-tying total with Diego Maradona, 12 goals, which is equal to Pele's total at World Cups.
