Football News: Jurgen Klopp breaks Premier League winning record in Liverpool triumph

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp set a new Premier League record by leading his team from behind to defeat Newcastle United 2-1 at St James Park.

Prior to Sunday's game, Klopp had won all ten of his Premier League encounters with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.

That impressive record appeared to be over when Anthony Gordon gave the Magpies a 25th-minute lead.

Thereafter, a shocking decision from ref resulted in Virgil van Dijk sent off due to a risky challenge on Alexander Isak.

Despite being a player down, the Reds mounted a spectacular comeback thanks to Darwin Nunez's match-winning performance off the bench.

In the 81st minute, the substitute equalised before tapping home a stoppage-time winner to secure all three points.

As a consequence of the convincing win, Klopp has now won 11 straight Premier League games versus Howe, establishing a new Premier League record for the longest winning streak by a manager against an opponent head coach.

Klopp's first league match against Howe was in April 2016, when Liverpool defeated the 45-year-old's Bournemouth team 2-1.

Klopp has met Howe in 15 competitive matches as Liverpool manager, winning 13 of them, drawing one, and losing one.

The one time Klopp came up short against Howe was in December 2016, when Bournemouth won 4-3 in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, the run of 11 consecutive top-flight wins began in December 2018 with a 4-0 away win over the Cherries.

Liverpool has scored 29 goals against Howe's teams during their 11-game winning streak, while conceding only four times.

Liverpool finished the weekend in fourth place with seven points, preserving their unblemished start to the Premier League season.

Their final game before the international break will be against Aston Villa at Anfield on Sunday.
