Jorginho has officially signed with Arsenal on an 18-month contract after leaving London rivals Chelsea. The 31-year-old signs a contract that will keep him in North London through the summer of 2024 as he moves to the Emirates Stadium in a deal estimated to be worth over £12 million.
Jorginho will wear number 20 for Arsenal and could make his league debut against Everton on Saturday at Goodison Park.
"Jorginho is a midfield player with intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience,"
manager Mikel Arteta told the club's official website.
"Jorginho has won in his career, but he still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here."
"We are so pleased to sign Jorginho and welcome him and his family to the club."
Arsenal sporting director Edu added:
"Jorginho is an established professional with a strong mentality who brings quality and experience into our squad."
"He is a player who fits our style of play, and he joins us at a very good moment where he can contribute in a key position to help maintain our momentum. We welcome Jorginho to Arsenal."
The Premier League leaders have been searching for a midfielder this month, but their high-profile pursuit of Moises Caicedo was thwarted by Brighton & Hove Albion's refusal to negotiate a transfer fee.
The revelation that Mohamed Elneny will likely miss a significant amount of time due to injury exacerbated Arsenal's need to bolster their squad. Jorginho leaves Chelsea after four and a half years, during which he made 213 appearances and netted 29 goals.
The Italian international, who was born in Brazil, assisted the Blues in winning some major trophies such as the Champions League and Europa League during his time at Stamford Bridge.
He also assisted Italy in winning the Euro 2020 championship by defeating England in the final at Wembley.
When Arteta was Manchester City's assistant coach, Jorginho, who had previously played for Napoli before joining Chelsea, was highly rumoured to be coming there. He placed third in the 2021 Ballon d'Or voting.
Chelsea, meanwhile, has completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez for a British record transfer fees from Benfica.
