Melbourne City beat Western Sydney Wanderers 2-0 to jump to fourth in the A-League standings after the first match of the new year. Lachlan Wales put the visitors ahead in the 35th minute with a curling effort from inside the area and two minutes later former Belgium international and Manchester United player Ritchie de Laet scored from the edge of the area. City suffered a setback early in the second half when they were reduced to 10 men after Rostyn Griffiths was given the marching orders after receiving a second yellow card. City had to thank their veteran goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic who stopped a penalty from Oriol Riera, denying a Wanderers comeback. Melbourne City's 2-0 win is their first ever victory away against the Wanderers
