Fabrizio Romano: 'Marseille are not trying to sign Cristiano Ronaldo'

Journalist Fabrizio Romano of Italy has dispelled rumours that Marseille is aiming to sign Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo toward the end of the transfer window.

It's still thought that the 37-year-old is trying to leave Old Trafford in order to sign with a Champions League team, and there have recently been rumours of a possible move to France. This season, Marseille will compete in the Champions League, and it is believed that Ronaldo is considering playing in France before the end of his professional career.

However, according to Romano, the Man United forward and Igor Tudor's team are not currently in talks.

Romano told Caught Offside.

"I want to clarify the Marseille rumours in France. I know their fans are going crazy, but at the moment there is nothing."

He further added saying:

"No meetings, no negotiations. It's also important to say that the Marseille president is angry and sad with those rumours,"/p>

The journalist claims that the Portuguese player's situation at Manchester United is "still at the same stage,". And that his agent Jorge Mendes is trying to arrange a transfer before the deadline.

"The situation with Cristiano Ronaldo is still at the same point, between himself and Manchester United, and with his agents. Jorge Mendes is still trying to find the best solution, but it's not easy to find a club at the level of Cristiano Ronaldo,"

he added.

Ronaldo participated in Man United's first three Premier League games against Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, and Liverpool. However, on Monday, he was not started against Liverpool and only made an appearance as a late substitute in the team's 2-1 triumph.

According to reports, among the clubs who turned down the opportunity to recruit him this summer were Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich.
Hasan Salihamidzic, the sporting director at Bayern Munich, outlined the reasons the reigning German champions opted against making a move for the striker earlier this week.

"When you now see how our attack is equipped - even without Robert Lewandowski - it's just difficult from a sporting and financial point of view,"

Salihamidzic told BILD's Phrasenmaher podcast.

"We have eight players for four positions upfront. We have established top players who are in the prime of their footballing age.

"We have talent that we want to give playing time too, so we all voted to go through with our plan. So that (signing Ronaldo) was out of question for us. We are very happy with how we're equipped."

Borussia Dortmund and Sporting Lisbon have both been recently linked to the Portuguese, but moves to either club are currently viewed as doubtful, while Atletico Madrid's interest has apparently cooled.

Despite Man United's continued insistence that Ronaldo is not for sale, it is reported that the club is discreetly planning for his exit before the transfer deadline, with both Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven and Antony of Ajax being considered as potential acquisitions later in the window.
