EURO 2020 : UK opposition leader Starmer condemns 'appalling' abuse of England players, critical of Johnson leadership

Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has condemned the abuse of England footballers following their defeat to Italy in Sunday's Euro 2020 final, and also criticised Prime Minister Boris Johnson for his stance on racism. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka have all received racist abuse online after missing penalty kicks in a shoot-out, which decided a match that had finished in a 1-1 draw after extra time at Wembley Stadium. Reacting to the abuse, Prime Minister Johnson said: "those responsible for this appalling abuse should be ashamed of themselves." However, Starmer said Johnson had: "failed the test of leadership", after the Prime Minister refused to criticise the supporters who booed players for taking the knee before matches in a stand against racism.
