Cricket News: Rahul Dravid delighted with Yashasvi Jaiswal's phenomenal debut

Yashasvi Jaiswal made an impressive debut in international cricket, scoring a century on his debut against the West Indies in Dominica.

The 21-year-old produced a superb 171 (387), complete with 16 fours and a six, and put on a massive 229-run first-wicket stand with captain Rohit Sharma.

Rahul Dravid, India's head coach, appreciated Jaiswal's debut performance and applauded him for pacing his innings nicely. Notably, he became the 17th Indian player to make a century on Test debut and the fourth batter from Mumbai to do so.

"I was very pleased to see that he was willing to play an attacking game when required, but also knuckle down and be defensive and work hard for his runs when required. As a coach, nothing pleases you more than that,"

Dravid was quoted as saying by Cricket Addictor.

Dravid went on to say that young players like Jaiswal and Shubman Gill will face greater challenges as they play more cricket and teams get to know them better.

"I know that Jaiswal and Gill will face other tougher challenges as they play more and more cricket. Teams will start getting to know them better. The challenge for Jaiswal [and Gill] is to respond to the tactics and strategies that West Indies is going to come up with in this game,"

he added.

Apart from Jaiswal, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was making a comeback to the team after being left out of the XI in the World Test Championship, also had an outstanding Test match.

During the game, the 36-year-old collected 12/131 (5/60 and 7/71). Notably, it was his eighth ten-wicket haul of the season and his sixth time picking up a five-wicket haul in each innings of the game.

Meanwhile, after leading the series 1-0, India will be eager to seal the deal in the second Test, which begins on Thursday, July 20 at Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
