Cricket News: Ian Bishop explains value of coming months for captain Rohit

Rohit Sharma has led India in two ICC events so far. India was eliminated in the semifinals of the 2022 T20 World Cup after losing to eventual champions England.

The Mumbai batsman also guided India to the World Test Championship final against Australia, but the 'Men in Blue' lost badly. As the Asian powerhouse prepare to host the ODI World Cup in October-November, Rohit will have the opportunity to write his name in the annals of Indian cricket.

Ian Bishop believes that if India wins significant events like the Asia Cup and the 50-over World Cup in the coming months, Rohit Sharma's career as captain will be immortalized.

The former West Indies pacer believes the five-time Indian Premier League champion captain understands how important a World Cup success is for a side like India.

"These next few months are critical to cementing his legacy as a leader if he can take some of that silverware back home. As far as leadership role is concerned, he is obviously aware that India with all its resources - playing and economic - the fulfillment of an ICC tournament since that Champions Trophy in England is something they definitely want,"

Bishop said in an interview with RevSportz.

Bishop believes Rohit has been outstanding in 50-over cricket. In ODI cricket, the right-handed batsman has 9837 runs in 244 matches at an average of 48.70 and a strike rate of 89.98.

Bishop commended Rohit for his achievements in the format while also emphasizing how he has been enhancing his credentials in red-ball cricket.

"Rohit has been an outstanding batter and particularly if you talk about his record in the 50-over format. Has been a general of that format. Now he is making a really good fist of his Test batting,"

Bishop said.

The Asia Cup, in which India is grouped with Pakistan and Nepal, is Rohit's next job. The tournament's seven-time champions will open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele.
