Team India was defeated by Australia by a massive 209-run margin in the just ended ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final at The Oval in London.
Team India's decade-long drought without an ICC title, which began with the Champions Trophy in 2013 under MS Dhoni's leadership, was extended with another heartbreak in the form of the WTC final.
On that topic, we look at Team India's journey since their previous ICC victory in 2013. The Men in Blue competed in the 2014 T20 World Cup and advanced to the finals, where they faced Sri Lanka.
The Lankan Lions, on the other hand, showed their authority in the top showdown, winning by six wickets in a low-scoring affair.
The next year, India had the opportunity to defend its title at the 2015 ODI World Cup, which was hosted by Australia and New Zealand. However, MS Dhoni's India were defeated in the semi-finals by the Australians, who went on to win the coveted trophy.
The team was eliminated from the ICC T20 World Cup in the semi-finals in both the 2016 and 2022 editions, captained by Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, respectively.
Team India faced Pakistan at The Oval in London in their bid to defend their Champions Trophy title under Kohli's leadership.
The Men in Green, on the other hand, completely overpowered the Indian team and easily triumphed by 180 runs. As the 2019 ODI World Cup approached, Team India was considered one of the favourites to win the tournament.
It was the same tournament that signalled the end of the famous MS Dhoni's World Cup reign.
The loss to the Kiwis cemented their place in the semi-finals, but it also extended their quest for an ICC crown.
With the advent of the ICC World T20 for the red-ball format, Team India dominated throughout the 2019-21 cycle and secured their place in the summit battle, where they will face the BlackCaps once again.
Despite a stellar two-year cycle under Kohli, Team India was unable to rise to the occasion and capture the coveted mace in 2021. Similarly, another defeat in the WTC's 2021-23 cycle has extended their decade-long drought without an ICC crown.
The Men in Blue, on the other hand, will try to create a core squad in time for the upcoming ODI World Cup at home and contend for their first trophy in nearly a decade.
