Boxing News: Authorities should decide who is doing better - Mary Kom

Star pugilist Mary Kom has indicated that the system of boxers having to go through trials ahead of big tournaments needs to be re-looked at. The celebrated Indian boxer said that proven performers should not be made to undergo selection trials and asserted that she did no wrong by seeking an exemption from the ones for the world championships. Earlier, a controversy broke out soon after it had emerged that the Boxing Federation of India cancelled trials in Mary Kom's 51kg category for the World Boxing Championships and had sent her name for it based on her past performances. Earlier, Asian Championships bronze medallist Nikhat Zareen, who would have faced Mary Kom in the trial, had then shot a letter to the BFI seeking an explanation as to why she was not given a chance to compete for the spot despite being ready to appear for the trials. To put weight behind her argument on no trials for proven performers the six-time world champion gave the example of badminton. She said star shuttlers like PV Sindhu and Saina do not give trials instead their past performance is taken into consideration while selecting them.
