Indian badminton fans had a lot to cheer as men's singles star Sourabh Verma won Russia Open 2018, defeating Japan's Koki Watanabe in the final. Also, the duo of Rohan Kapoor and Kuhoo Garg won silver in the mixed doubles event. In the title clash, Sourabh came back from a game behind to beat Japan's qualifier 18-21, 21-12, 21-17 to win his first title of the season. Sourabh had won the All India senior ranking tournament in Bangalore to make the cut for the Asian Games squad. He had clinched the Chinese Taipei Grand Prix Gold and finished runners-up at the Bitburger Open in 2016. In Mixed Doubles, the pair of Rohan Kapoor and Kuhoo Garg lost in the Final against the Russian-Korean pair 19-21, 17-21 to settle for a silver medal.
