American Sam Querrey defeated Argentina's Diego Schwartzman in three gruelling sets to advance to the quarter-finals of the China Open in Beijing. Querrey, world ranked 55, held a 28 centimetre height advantage over the diminutive Schwartzman but that counted for little as the first two sets were shared, both via tie-breaks. Schwartzman has enjoyed a fine season and currently resides at 16 in the world rankings - but was broken by Querrey in the fourth game of the decider and that ultimately proved the difference. Querrey goes on to face second seed Alexander Zverev of Germany in the quarter-finals.
