Defending Australian Open champion Roger Federer began his quest for a record seventh title with a regulation 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 first round win over Denis Istomin. Seeded three this year, Federer currently shares top spot in the all-time Aussie Open list with Novak Djokovic and Roy Emerson, the latter winning his six titles before the start of the Open era in 1968. A win in Melbourne would also be the Swiss maestro's 100th tour-level crown - only Jimmy Connors, with 109, has won more.
