Tokyo's showcase National Stadium was front and centre on Sunday for the Summer Olympics athletics test event, just 10 weeks before the same arena is scheduled to host the opening ceremonies. The event took place without any spectators amid the state of emergency issued by the Japanese government for the capital. In recent polls, 70-80% of people in Japan surveyed want the Olympics to ether be postponed again or cancelled. That sentiment has not moderated with Tokyo, Osaka and other areas under emergency orders with cases surging, particularly the more contagious variants. Only about 2% of Japan's population has been vaccinated for COVID-19. The country has reported just over 10,000 deaths from the coronavirus. An anti-Olympics demonstration is planned to be held outside the stadium on Sunday, with protesters calling for the cancellation of the games this summer.
