Rafael Nadal says he understands and respects Naomi Osaka's decision not to speak to the media at this year's French Open, but he doesn't necessarily agree. Nadal says he believes the media has an important role to play in tennis and he won't be following Osaka's lead. The world No.2 said earlier this week that having to face questions from the media after a loss is like "kicking someone when they are down" and has a detrimental effect on players' mental health. She added she will refuse all media conferences and interview requests at the tournament, and although she expects to be fined, she says she hopes that money will be donated to a mental health charity.
