Marco Cecchinato dropped the first eight games of his second round match at the Monte Carlo Masters but is still in the draw after battling back to beat Stan Wawrinka 0-6, 7-5, 6-3. The number 11 seed looked down and out as the 2014 champion Wawrinka, unseeded this year, served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, but Cecchinato broke serve, levelled the match and broke again in the sixth game of the decider to set up a remarkable turnaround. The world number 16's reward is a third-round match against Argentina's Guido Pella, who put out number 7 seed Mari Cilic earlier in the day.
