Kohli won't be made Test captain: Aakash

Virat Kohli has drawn the attention of Indian cricket fans for his comeback as Test team captain, especially following the Men in Blue's poor performance in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has categorically denied any possibility of Kohli leading Team India again.

Indian cricket fans on social media have been rallying in support of either Ravichandran Ashwin or Virat Kohli to replace Rohit Sharma as captain in the longest format of the game, but as Chopra stated, after Kohli stepped down as Test captain, the 34-year-old is unlikely to return as skipper for the new WTC cycle.

"He can be made but he won't be and maybe that's the right thing as well because no one asked him to leave Test captaincy. This thing has been cleared multiple times from different quarters that no one said that he won't remain the Test captain,"

said the former Indian Test opener on his YouTube channel.

Virat stood down as India's Test captain following the 2022 South Africa tour, which the team lost 2-1.

Kohli was definitely one of the most successful Indian Test captains, leading the side to 40 victories in 68 Tests. However, Kohli's captaincy story appeared to be a schism between him and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later on.

"In fact, when he took this decision that he won't remain the captain, the BCCI was taken aback slightly that what really happened, that they will have to search for a captain. So that was a slightly different thing, but not now,"

Chopra further added.

All of these discussions about Test captaincy have arisen as a result of Team India's failure in the WTC 2023 final against Australia, which was won by a Pat Cummins-led side by a margin of 209 runs; it will be interesting to see how things unfold in the future, as Rohit will be seen leading the team in whites for the West Indies tour.
