The former England boss shared his worst experience with the 'fantastic' Paul Scholes. "Paul Scholes could play everywhere. He was fantastic. One of the biggest, saddest problems I had was when he came to me and said he didn’t want to play for England anymore. A sad day. I tried to convince him to stay but he wouldn’t so finish in 2004 in Portugal. What to do with [David] Beckham, [Steven] Gerrard, Scholes, [Frank] Lampard? You let them play. They are so good so they should be on the pitch. What would have happened if I benched them? They were very good. We did rather good. We did okay."
