Football News: Manchester City 'make £42.7m bid for Matheus Nunes'

Manchester City are said to have made a £42.7 million approach for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The Citizens are trying to acquire a midfielder to replace Ilkay Gundogan, who left on a free transfer to join Barcelona earlier this summer.

Kevin De Bruyne's injury on the first day of the Premier League season has also prompted Man City to bring in reinforcements.

They initially named West Ham United's Lucas Paqueta as a primary target, but have subsequently backed out of negotiations, despite the fact that the Brazilian is under investigation for alleged betting violations.

As a result, they've focused on potential replacements such as Nunes and Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze.

Man City appear to have opted to pick up their pursuit of Nunes, who is believed to be a cheaper option, with Eze expected to want a fee in the region of £70m.

Manchester City have confirmed their interest, according to writer Fabrizio Romano, with an opening proposal in excess of €50 million (£42.7 million).

The Portugal international has already accepted personal terms with the European champions and is eager to finalise his move.

Nunes, who joined Wolves from Sporting Lisbon for £38 million last summer, has five years left on his deal, with a one-year extension option.

While Wolves want to keep the player, they may be tempted to sell him due to continued concerns over Financial Fair Play.

This summer, they have already sold numerous players, including Ruben Neves to Al-Hilal and Nathan Collins to Brentford.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are close to completing the signing of Jeremy Doku from Rennes for a cost of £55.5 million.

After Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol, the Belgian winger will be the club's third acquisition of the summer.
