Football News: Erling Braut Haaland breaks Manchester City's all-time season scoring record

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has broken clubs' all-time season goal scoring record after striking 5 past RB Leipzig. The current Premier League champions defeated the German club by thumping them 7-0 to reach the UCL quarter-final.

The Norwegian summer signing had already scored 34 goals in 35 appearances across all competitions in his first season with Man City. The Ex-BvB player has now registered 39 goals in 36 fixtures thus, breaking club's all-time season scoring record.

At the age of 22 and 236 days, Haaland has become Man City's all-time leading scorer in a single season. He broke Tommy Johnson's 94-year record of 38 goals which he scored way back in the 1928-29 season.

Moreover, Haaland has written his name in Champions League history, surpassing Kylian Mbappe's record. By striking 5 goals against Leipzig, the 22-year-old became the youngest player to score 30 goals in the competition's history.

The Man City striker has done so after only 25 games and surpassing the previous benchmark held by Ruud van Nistelrooy (34 matches).

Furthermore, Haaland is only the third player in Champions League history to score five goals in a single game, joining former Shakhtar Donetsk striker Luiz Adriano in October 2014 (against BATE Borisov) and former Barcelona forward Lionel Messi in March 2012. (against Bayer Leverkusen).

Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne also scored as Man City cruised into the Champions League quarter-finals with an 8-1 aggregate victory over their German opponents.

Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Red Bull Arena three weeks ago, Pep Guardiola's side made a strong start to the second leg, with Haaland scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute after Benjamin Henrichs was adjudged to have touched the ball with his outstretched right arm after a VAR review.

City's No.9 then scored his hat-trick on the stroke of halftime when Amadou Haidara slammed his attempted clearing into the striker's shins after a Ruben Dias header hit the post and trickled across the goalline.

City's eagerness to score more goals was clear and they came out the blocks swiftly in the second half, with Gundogan caressing a lovely left-footed strike into the bottom corner three minutes after the break.

Haaland's fourth and fifth goals of the night came soon after, with the midfielder blasting home two similar efforts inside the penalty area just before the hour mark, before exiting to wild ovation in the 63rd minute.

In additional time, De Bruyne completed an excellent display with a beautiful curling strike into the top corner from outside the area, securing City's joint-largest Champions League triumph.

Guardiola's side will try to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight games when they host Burnley in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday evening.
