Football News: Enzo Fernandez is willing to make a Liverpool move this summer

If Enzo Fernandez decides to leave Benfica in the new year, it is said that he would prefer a transfer to Liverpool. The 21-year-old midfielder only signed with the Portuguese powerhouses in July after leaving River Plate for an estimated sum of of €12 million (£10.3 million).

Since joining Benfica, Fernandez has improved his performance to a new level, making 24 appearances this season across all competitions and providing three goals and five assists.

The versatile midfielder, who played for the World Cup champions Argentina, was one of the breakthrough stars there as well. After an outstanding performance in Qatar, he was voted the Young Player of the Tournament.

When the transfer window reopens in January, Fernandez is expected to become one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe as some big European giants are now looking for his signatures such as Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona, and Real Madrid are all rumoured to be interested in signing him.

According to a recent source, Jurgen Klopp's team and Fernandez will sign a contract at the end of the 2022-23 season.

However, a different report has subsequently claimed that because to their exorbitant asking prices, both the Argentine and Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund, who is also highly on Klopp's list of midfield wants, are unlikely targets for Liverpool to pursue in January.

Fernandez's contract with Benfica, which is said to contain a €120 million (£103 million) release clause, still has four and a half years still to run.

If the Reds decide to increase their interest in Fernandez, he would want to join them at Anfield, according to The Mirror.

In the summer, Liverpool and Benfica signed an agreement for the Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez to join the club in a deal that may eventually reach a club record of £85 million.

Ruben Dias was transferred from Benfica to Manchester City two years earlier for approximately £65 million, and in the summer of 2019, they received approximately £114 million from Atletico Madrid in exchange for the striker Joao Felix, making this transfer still will be the costliest for the team.

Instead of spending a lot of money on a new center-midfielder over the summer, Liverpool signed Juventus' Arthur Melo on a season-long loan.

The Brazilian has struggled with injuries, hasn't played in the Premier League, while others like Naby Keita and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain have spent disappointing amounts of time this season in the hospital.

Liverpool will make their return to competitive play on Thursday when they travel to face Manchester City in the fourth round of the EFL Cup. Liverpool is now sixth in the Premier League table, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal.
