Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan is allegedly available for purchase by Arsenal this summer. Meanwhile, Arsenal are currently compositing for the Premier League title and could grab the trophy after nearly two decades.
The gunners currently have a game in hand and have a narrow 2-point lead over current champions Manchester City. Due to the absence of summer signing Gabriel Jesus due to injury Mikel Arteta have very few options in his attacking ranks.
Thus, the gunners are exploring the transfer market and are looking to sign a key forward. However, Leandro Trossard, who was acquired in January, Gabriel Martinelli, and Eddie Nketiah have all played mostly as the central striker in Jesus' absence.
Prior to the 2023-24 season, improvements in the final third are planned, and according to Give Me Sport journalist Phil Brown, Inter forward Martinez has been on Arsenal's radar for some time.
Brown asserts that the 25-year-old, who has a contract with San Siro through June 2026, is willing to command a high price from the Gunners.
"Arsenal have been interested in Lautaro for a long time,"
said Brown as quoted by football.london.
"Whether they've actually ever made a firm bid, I'm not sure."
"But certainly, there's been talk of one, and I think he's a player they would be willing to pay quite a lot of money for."
In the summer of 2018, Martinez moved to Inter from Argentine team Racing Club, and since then, he has established himself as a significant player and one of the top attackers in Serie A.
With 215 appearances for the Nerazzurri in all competitions, the 2022 World Cup champion with Argentina has 90 goals and 31 assists, including 16 goals and seven assists in 34 games so far this season.
For the past few seasons, Martinez has been linked with a high-profile transfer away from San Siro, but a deal for the £70 million striker ultimately fell through.
A 1-0 loss at Bologna last weekend allowed Napoli to increase their enormous lead at the top to 18 points, making it all but guaranteed that they will win Serie A this season instead of nter.
After the defeat against Bologna, Martinez expressed his disappointment and dropped a faint hint that he would be leaving the team soon.
"It would be wrong to talk too much in the heat of the moment, but the sensation I have right now is that we'll get nowhere playing like this,"
Martinez told Sky Sport Italia as quoted by The Mirror.
"We need to be more consistent, we just played a great game in the Champions League, we arrive here fired up and then put in this performance."
"We've got to get our heads up and push forward, because we'll get nowhere like this. We are 18 points behind Napoli, so clearly something is not working."
Arsenal are also said to have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams, who has less than 18 months left on his contract and faces an uncertain future with the Spanish club.
