Manchester City finally saw off spirited Newport County in the fifth round of the FA Cup, scoring four second half goals to beat the 'Exiles' 4-1 and book their place in the quarter-finals. It was League Two side Newport that created the best chance of the first half - Tyreeq Bakinson's header forcing a smart save from Ederson. But having held firm up to half-time, Newport were undone five minutes into the second half when Leroy Sane's shot hit goalkeeper Joe Day in the face and bounced in. Philip Foden doubled the English champions' lead in the 75th minute, although Padraig Amond gave Newport hope of a comeback when he lobbed Ederson. But Foden replied almost instantly and Riyad Mahrez sealed the win in stoppage time, keeping City on target to win the FA Cup for the first time under Pep Guardiola.
